There are those rare albums that define a period in your life, and yet at the same time belong at any other time. This is a rare and perfect album, flawless, and one of my favorites of all time. While mellow and brooding throughout, Story manages to showcase a quiet virtuosity that makes it clear that she could do anything at anytime on the piano. It would be a disservice to call this mood music, or just think of it as "relaxing", although it is truly relaxing. There is a real genius to the compositions on this album that you cannot help but find compelling. It touches something very deeply in me every time I hear it, decades after my first listen.

I used to hear "Wedding Rain" on a jazz station back in 1987, but didn't know what the title of the song was or who performed it. I thought that it sounded like a Liz Story piece and attempted to find the song. The only Liz Story albums I was able to find at the record stores that I would frequent were "Unaccountable Effect" and "Part Of Fortune", both of which are wonderful and in my music collection. Fast forward 25 years, I found that elusive tune ("Wedding Rain") and was introduced to a real gem in Solid Colors. It was well worth the wait!

Somewhere in my mess of boxes from moving over the years I have the original cassette of this music. It was Liz Story among others who encouraged me to finally study the piano at the age of 33. This CD is awesome with great music, great sound and a sweet haunting tone throughout. I love all of the pieces here but particularly 'Bradley's Dream'. Liz Story's piano playing is sweet, precious, infectious and touching, she has a way of playing the piano with a distinctive sound in her music, that you always know when you are listening to a piano piece by the gorgeous and talented Liz Story.

"Wedding Rain" still gives me chills. Story has an impressonistic style that never veers off into the trite.
  • The Very Best!
