In our family we've loved this version of the Bach cello suites for almost 40 years. We had the good fortune to hear Yo-Yo Ma play the suites in a concert in Washington's Kennedy Center near the time this album was released. Fabulous and very moving. But it's awfully nice to have these sudio recordings, which sound dance-like and, yes, magical.

These will at once calm you and haunt you. Perfect performances by Ma, which is probably redundant for me to say. I often wish that people who give an album such as this one or two stars would write reviews to explain themselves, but perhaps they can't string together a sentence. Sorry for the snark, but you will NEVER regret purchasing this album.

I recently had the amazing good fortune to hear Yo-Yo Ma play a solo concert. I was blown away. But tickets were pricey, even though seeing him live as Bucket List item for me and CDs in the lobby were $25 and up. With a discography of 75 recordings, I googled "Best Yo-Yo Ma albums and this was rated #3. It includes 6 Bach Suites which is 36 different selections. At iTunes cost of $16.99, this is a steal. Not only that, it's remastered from the 1980 original recording date. The review I read said this particular CD besides being fabulous was perfect for relaxing. And it is. Tonight Bach and Ma put me to sleep much as one of these movements did during the concert last week. I couldn't help it. I closed my eyes to hear Ma better and the beginning of the creative dream state entered my mind in moments. At 60, Ma is in his prime and plays with great emotion. He has explored many, many different types of music forms. He has been described as "omnivorous." Can't wait to buy more. His recordings with Silk Road are outstanding. We have owned a few for years. You will not be disappointed at this superlative recording of Bach.

I was led to this particular album via the one track that's featured in Woody Allen's 1988 film ANOTHER WOMAN. Alas, it has become one of my favorite classical albums of all time. Passionate and committed performance by Yo-Yo Ma that refutes any belief that "unaccompanied cello" means "threadbare sound." Lovingly presented and executed, and a must-have for classical completists.
  • I like the breathiness

I have the historical version by Casals, the once-rare CD by Starker on Sefel (I think it was), one on original instruments (Kuijken), and I've heard several others, some of which are excellent (esp. Haimovitz, and Rudin on Naxos), and I have compared this to Ma's newer version. And I still think this version the best. Good deal too.
