You, the reader, may have come across this band or album for songs you’ve heard from the Fate series such as To the Beginning; Kara no Kyōkai works, like Hikarifuru; or you may have just been casually looking through Japanese artists. I’m writing this review as a Kalafina (and Yuki Kajiura, their composer) fan of 8.5 years. I first suggest that you stick with Kalafina’s music because the band is one of very very few, especially in English music, that produces a sound of classic and clear harmony. Audibly in Japan, be a man or a woman singing, the harmony is often (but not always) fairly high and very similar, in 2, maybe 3 parts. I don’t know how everyone works, but to me, this can get boring. Kalafina has much more variety in song, from solos to 4-part harmony in EVERY piece. And their vocal range might not seem important, but it’s something to note, and something that makes songs interesting in comparison to each other. Also, even though this is a group of singers, I was surprised upon becoming interested in each member! Even in studio sound, these songs are made with 3 separate, NOTICEABLY distinctive voices. Hearing this, instead of such typical and processed sound, made me look up the band further. Even more commendable variety comes in the genre, which you should already have noticed upon hearing every sample. You have your ballads, varying degrees of rock in different moods, high-energy songs, and even middle-eastern instruments and harmony. Don’t come blindly purchasing the album thinking “Well, it’s just another J-Pop/Anime thing”! 🤣 Of the 4 American-release albums (but not all their actual albums), Consolation is my personal favorite.

That's the second opening of "Fate/Zero" and where I officially start collecting other Kalafina albums. Kalafina has great music and I heard many from "Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Bladeworks" and "Puella Magi Madoka Magica".

iTunes, i would like to respectfully request that you add Kalafina’s new album, Far on the Water (which just came out yesterday) to the music under Kalafina in the American store. Consolation is beautiful but there are a lot of gorgeous songs on the new one and it makes me really unhappy that I can’t listen to them ever :( I will not download them illegally of course, but others might since you are not providing us with a legal means of getting it without buying the hard copy CD, which is very expensive. Unless there is some sort of country barrier preventing you from allowing the songs to be bought in America via iTunes (which is strange since that’s not the case for the stuff already on here), please take my word for it that a lot of fans would be very happy if they could purchase Kalafina’s new album from their own country.

"Seventh Heaven" is one of my favorite Japanese albums of all time, so of course I had high expectations for "Red Moon." No such luck there; Kalafina's sophomore album fell far short of the perfection that was their first and never quite grew on me much as a whole, though there were bits and pieces that I liked. I never got a chance to listen to "After Eden" because for some reason it's not available on iTunes US, so naturally after one relative disappointment and one complete mystery, I was hesitant about "Consolation." That hesitation proved to be totally unfounded, and this is one of my favorite 2013 albums so far. Some tracks I like more than others, of course, but there is not a single dud on the album. "Consolation" and "Signal" in particular are basically perfect. There are very few groups out there that are vocally superior to Kalafina, and I'm SO glad to see that they've hit their optimum music-making stride once again. I highly, highly recommend this album to anyone who appreciates chamber pop with beautiful vocal harmony.
