    I missed buying this back in the 60s and have looked for it innumerable time ever since before finding it recently. It was buried in somebody’s vault way too long. Belafonte perfectly projects the mixture of emotions inherent in these songs, and the Belafonte Singers’ backing gives depth to the music that enhances those emotions.

    This is chain gang music. I lived near a county farm growing up white in Georgia and knew a few, mostly black, wearing the striped pants and sometimes chains on the gangs. It is a dark chapter for humanity in how we treat each other and yet a lesson in the depth and power of our human spirits. Unavaliable for many years, here it is on iTunes.
