Michael Dease has produced a beautiful album and the great thing about it is that he has recruited some of the best young talent to deliver a very well rounded recording. Mike has led by example by creating a set that is varied and a great listen. I will not go into great detail here; there are very solid professional reviews already for this recording. All I can say that is a labor of love and the combination of musicians in their twenties with slightly older musicians produces great results. Another great thing about this recording is that the young lions here ( Bassist Endea Owens, Alto saxophonists Markus Howell and Immanuel Wilkins, together with drummer Luther Allison)show great maturity and great personal sounds on their respective instruments. Michael Dease is in top form here, always with a full and complex tone in his trombone combined with virtuoso chops.Behn Gillece on vibraphone and Glen Zaleski shine throughout. Highly recommended!

Michael Dease is one of the best and most inspiring musician’s on the scene today. Still in his mid-thirties, Dease has inspired so many young musicians all of the world. His newest album, "Father Figure," takes a look at the role mentorship and fatherhood bring to life and music. On this album, Dease brings the spotlight to four new talents on the jazz scene: Immanuel Wilkins on alto sax, Markus Howel on alto sax, Endea Owens on bass, and Luther Allison on drums. Also, on the album is Posi-Tone veteran Behn Gillece on vibes and pianist Glenn Zaleksi. The album is a brilliant mix of originals and carefully chosen tunes by Claudio Roditi, Charlie Parker and Mulgrew Miller and even a song from the Music Man. Buy this album today!! I can’t wait to keep enjoying “Father Figure” as it remains on repeat in my home.

Mr. Dease and company bring something different to each track, but the entire disc swings, even the ballads. Love this. Now do I download the album, buy a physical copy or both? :)
