A fine self-released album by the former Jazz Messenger featuring some of the finest lesser-known players in jazz at the time it was recorded. Today drummer John Lamkin and bassist Vicente Archer are well-established players in New York and have since recorded with Harrison on the altoist's 2004 Nagel-Heyer release "Free Style" - an album which emphasizes the possibility of hip-hop beats on instrumental jazz. Harrison's nephew, trumpeter Christian Scott (16 at the time of this recording) is now the talk of the jazz world as he is poised to release his first session as a leader for Concord Records. Harrison's concept is organic, relying on very few licks. He has chosen a pianist with the soul of Phineas Newborn, Jr. and the sophisticated touch of Bill Evans. Highly recommended.
