While it’s no Don’t Be Cruel (which he seemed to be reminded of quite frequently in the biopic), I still think it’s a good album. The hits stick out, and the others are good songs but lack a unique quality to them. I think while Teddy Riley is fantastic at his job, I have a love/hate relationship with the beats on this record. I love the punch and aggressiveness to them, but if you take the drums out of all of the songs and put the beat of Get Away under all of them, nobody would notice the difference. I do like the sound of this record and the edge it packs, but it just lacks the flavor that Don’t Be Cruel had, and from what we saw in the biopic, it sounded like Bobby was a lot more present and interested in the production of Don’t Be Cruel, and not so much when working on Bobby. I think this is because of his drug use turning into drug abuse in between the two albums, and while of course we don’t know that for sure, that’s the knowledge we took away from the movie. I also think Bobby was getting into lots of trouble around this time which probably brought negative press to the album’s release, and I think the album could’ve been a lot bigger had this not been the case. Overall, it’s a good album and while there is some noticeable filler, there are at least 4-5 songs that stand out.
