Reviews

  • Utterly poor remastering of partial tracks.

Whoever pulled the tracks on this collection did a very lousy job. There are only about 5 new complete songs on the whole darn thing. AND there are partial tracks that would’ve been hits (like My Friend aka I’ve Got A Friend) that Dennis wrote that never got fully worked, assembled by Mark or whomever did this collection. Instead we get five versions of Add Some Music (hey #4 is different because it has a different set of lyrics). The Beach Boys call something new and unreleased when a simple doo wang is changed. Come on, Guys. If you are going to do a new archive set then put some effort into it. Could’ve been great summarizes a productive period of Beach Boys history. Lazy retreads and then “15 Big Ones”. Hey at least Brian doesn’t purposely crack his voice on the enclosed version of Back Home!

Great period of time creatively for the band. Brian was still active and writing great stuff, but at this point the rest of the group had stepped up to make it much more of a collaboration. Dennis particularly contributed a lot as a songwriter in these sessions. Lots of new tracks here as opposed to just the backing tracks and isolated vocals which are still amazing to listen to, as they illustrate clearly just how talented these guys were, and how on top of their game they were particularly at a time when popular audiences had tuned out.

If you're looking for discarded number ones, you may be disappointed. However, there is a real treasure trove of great work here! Personally, I am always so amazed at Brian's style of arranging his music. The other band member's music is showcased as well here, but IMHO Brian's more lighthearted, often whimsical treatment of composing just towers in comparison. Thank God Brian and the Beach Boys were gifted to created so much wonderful music that we can still enjoy hearing 'new' music from them after all these years! What a gift!

Oh my. ‘Unreleased’ often means ‘no one likes it’. Such is the case with late stage Beach Boys.
