Saw Rockpile about 10 ten times between May 1978 and July 1979; was lucky enough to be at the tiny Bottom Line Club in NYC for the late show on 10/25/78, when Keith Richards---back from Canada after a legal matter, stepped up and joined in on "Let It Rock"; Keith even stayedf on stage for Edmunds "Down Down Down", and than he left the stage--it happened just that way, I got the pix to prove it.. Rockpile was.never a huge act at the time, because in that era not tha many people got it--these guys were never into the glitz, glam, make-up etc; and the fact that Nick and Dave have had respectable careers since 1981 speaks volumes .....; the best--nobody close....if you don't get it...well...it's like trying to tell a stranger about Rock and Roll

I was familiar with Dave Edmunds and loved Cruel to Be Kind but was so bummed that this is the only "Rockpile" album completed. They opened for Blondie back in the late 70's and I saw them in St. Louis but they only got to play far too little. The song "Heart" is emblematic of the album, pure pop mastered with the band's drummer, not Edmunds or Lowe singing the vocal. In the version included on Nick Lowe's Greatest Hits, the arrangement is slowed to the point of putting the listener to sleep compared to Rockpile's screaming great version. One of the bands who burned too bright, too quickly....
  • Rockpile also played on Carlene Carter's first album

You can't find it on iTunes, but "Musical Shapes" is another great record by this band with Carlene Carter (Nick Lowe's squeeze at the time) singing lead. Carter's cover of her step-father Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" is amusing for many reasons. Good stuff. Try to find it on vinyl where you have the false ending on "Cry, Cry" that was deleted on the CD release.

This is great rock and roll. Tight band, tighter music and simple fun.

Listen to the song "Heart". If that isn't one of the purest hook laden pop song ever written, then I don;t know what is. Close your eyes and sing along.
  • HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- BUY IT NOW!

Rockpile's "Second Of Pleasure" is a great-feeling rock record filled with great Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe songs and vocals. The band rocks like nobody's business. Buy it and you will not regret it.

This is the album that actually introduced me to Dave Edmunds. (I had heard Nick Lowe, but did not own any of his albums.) This is one of my top 10 records. After I heard this record in the early 80's I went and bought "Jesus of Cool" (Called "Pure Pop for Now People in the U.S.A.) by Lowe and "Twangin' - by Edmunds. (Which introduced me to the Stray cats... Different story) These albums are in a steady rotation in my collection. If you are only going to "pick and choose" from this album, I suggest: Teacher Teacher Heart Wrong Again When I Write the Book But the real truth is, I don't think there is a dud on the whole record.
  • Stunningly Cool

Songs, production, performance... after nearly thirty years, these tracks still show that the basics of great music make classics. There are signs of budget and time restraints-overdubs after the fact, open mike bleeds- but there are very few examples of tighter playing and singing that maintain personality and character like 'Seconds' does. Some focus on the personality issues surrounding Lowe and Edmunds and miss the tremendous, unmistakeable energy that Rockpile's music had, covers and originals. This new CD compilations live tracks and Everly styled duet by Edmunds and Lowe make this a five star collection not to be missed.
