I've always thought Charlie Mingus (Only his best friends were allowed to call him "Charlie") was in a silly mood when he and his band at the time recorded this album. Maybe it doesn't reach the heights of say "Mingus Ah Um" or "Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus, Mingus" or even "Black Saint and the Sinner Lady", but it has my all-time favorite Mingus song "Hog-Callin' Blues" and that in and of itself is enough to give this the highest rating possible. Add to that the fact that every song is phenomenal and you have one of the best albums in all of jazz. Mingus was the true heir of Duke Ellington and this album is just one more reason to believe that statement. Buy this and you'll never regret it. By the way, "Eat That Chicken" is one of Mingus' many little musical tributes, this time his affectionate tip of the pork pie hat to Fats Waller. Love it...

Man I tell you, this one is a must. Speak! You want a little church? Come forth and preach! Any Mingus is good Mingus, but this one is up there in the heavens, scours the earth, and digs deep in the depths of hell.

The opening review says it better than I can, but I'll add this: if the image of a group of musicians (with major chops) breaking into a studio and playing as wild and loose as they can appeals to you, you'll like this album. Roland Kirk is amazing.

This album kicks you in the pants and makes you like it. Mingus spews random gutteral phrases like an evangelical devil. He plays piano with two pork chops for hands and makes it sound great. Listen thrice. The first two just go by you like a freight train on a down grade...
