  • Delightful

This is a delightful record. I see little "depressing" about it other than just being very lowkey and laidback. As good as anything Velvet Underground ever put out. As entertainingly folky as Mike Oldfield. That this girl was discouraged from future endeavors is absurd. Reminds me a bit of Goldfrapp's lackadaisical Seven album.

I find this album to have a child-like feel to it. It reminds me of home when I was a child and mom used to sing me to sleep. I love this album, I would recommend it to everyone I meet. <3
  • Folk rehashed, with pretension.

Perhaps people haven't heard actual folk music, but Vashti is anything but original, also a few years late to the 60's folk revival. With a voice that I personally find painful to listen to, she shows a very lacking range of composition with a very dull album. The fact that she only made this and nothing else until thirty years later shows the lack of vision and passion in this supposed artist.

...those artists and many more would be nowhere without Vashti Bunyan. This delicate little chamber-folk gem, overlooked at the time, seems more innovative and influential than ever today. Though Bunyan has just a whisp of a voice, almost a whisper on some tunes, the intimacy and individuality of her expression gives it remarkable power. I hear the influence of Donovan in these tracks, and possibly some Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell. After the explosion of the 60s, Bunyan was at the leading edge of artists looking back to earlier times to escape the madness of modern life, with many of her songs sounding like English folk tunes or Renaissance songs. Regardless of her influences, this is truly a unique musical vision that arrives perfectly formed and perfected on "Just Another Diamond Day."

This album must not have been marketed very well because I would have loved it in 1970 when it released. So it when I discoverd it recently on iTunes it was a nice surprise (I initially thought she was copying Feist - nice to know that she's from my generation).
  • Insanely beautiful. Music of the gods.

Like Eva Cassidy and Enya singing lullabies in heaven, with Nickel Creek playing the instruments (but not singing). Sweet but not too sweet. Folky not ethereal. Very nice tunes and spare arrangements.

From thew first track Vashti's voice enthralls the mind while her occasional flouting makes for a truly special buy. You really feel like your just sitting in a meadow with some gypsy serenading you.
  • Easy Listening
