    he's not. He's far too breathy and his grasp of the text is wanting. His pitch is OK but he should have done a few extra takes to splice in the gaffs. Eschenbach is the only point to get this if but to marvel at vast talent in all things music.

    What a treat - the leading German Lieder singer of our day, teamed with the best accompanist a singer could hope for, performing the most perfect song cycle Schubert composed. The delicate, introspective blend of poetry and melody in a dialogue between singer and pianist on the eternal theme of love and loss are engagingly performed by Goerne and Eschenbach. It doesn't get any better than this, unless you are lucky enough to hear them perform live in recital.
