I originally bought this album on cassette in 1985 for listening material during a nine month Western Pacific cruise with the US Navy. I already had Don Quitiox, Gord's Gold, Sundown and one or two other of his early/mid seventies albums so I was excited to have found something fairly recent. My first impression was that the songs lacked the introspective spark which had attracted me to Lightfoot in the beginning. Where the production of previous albums had subtle qualities that provided for an exciting experience each and every time, Shadows seemed to throw everything at you at once leaving little to no room for the songs to "breathe." The music was nicely done and Gordon's voice still maintained his trademark honey-rich quality but there just wasn't anything catchy about it. I put into my collection and listened to it sparingly. Then it happened. While on a midnight to four AM watch, the melody from Heaven Help The Devil was running around in my head unbidden. I decided to give Shadows a more thorough shot, paying close attention the lyrics and ignoring the heavy-handed production. What I found was Lightfoot at his best: Tremendous writing, honest delivery and a man in full control of his creativity. If you've never heard this album before do yourself a favor and don't compare it to his earlier releases. Approach it with an open mind and you'll find that Shadows is one of his best.

Gord is absolutely amazing and this album vastly underrated. I'll do Anything, She's not the Same, 14 Karat Gold and In My Fashion are outstanding for starters and all songs have Gord's gifted and inspiring lyrics--Highly recommend.

This album is strong through and through but by my reckoning four songs in particular speak to that existential sadness for which music is the only cure. Rock me, Gordon.

Thank you itunes for finally adding this. If i read one more whining and obnoxius review from "sleepless" i was gonna lose my mind. Your dream came true, no more complaining about triangle. Good album. Though not nearly his best and triangle isnt even that good. Nonetheless, Gord is God.
  • thank you, iTunes
