Continually exceeding expectations

There is a lot of "new age" music available that can put you to sleep, not so much because of its beauty as much as for its melodrama, hyperbolic sense of romanticism, or just plain dullness. Hopkins' most contemplative works, like this one, surpass them by a lot. Sure, his work in other areas combines electronica sensibilities with melody in surprising and successful ways, but this single, like some of his other ballads, is just tender enough, just original enough, and just heartbreaking enough, to transcend the genre.
