Yeah, I love this album, what's it to ya?! Had the 8-Track and, in my head, I can still hear where the channel changes in Dream Lady Mother Freedom rocked and I think This Isn't What the Governmeant is still relevant today.

This brings back painful memories of teenage angst . . . sounds different several decades later but still love this song . . .
  • A MASTERWORK OF SONGWRITING GENIUS!!!

Bread is truly one of the greatest american singer/songwriting bands of the late 60's/70's era. David Gates & James Griffin were genius songwriters that are sorely missed in today's world mass produced disposable music where nearly everyone sounds the same. There was truly something special about the honesty, quality and integrity of the music produced during this very prolific songwriting era. Bread truly launched the soft rock era with their brilliantly crafted ballads that influenced an entire decade of songwriters. But what is misunderstood and important also to add is that Bread could also rock out just as hard when they wanted to. David Gates voice is one the most beautiful and unique sounding voices of all time. His ethereal voice soothes the listener's ear while the honesty of his lyrics melt your heart. Just listen to the heartbreaking mourning on "Everything I Own" which was written by Gates after the loss of his father. Other masterpieces here are the hits "Diary" with its brilliantly hypnotic acoustic guitar work played by Gates and their huge soft rock atmospheric hit "Baby I'm A Want You". Other notables are "Daughter" with its Beatles like piano feel and "Just Like Yesterday". If you want the finest in singing, songwriting and music production then look no further. Musicians to be take note this is how it is done.
  • Bread... where are you when we need you?

I remember sitting in a dorm room with 4 or 5 other guys in 1969 listening to Breads 1st LP. I had gotten it at a local record store in San Antonio, TX. We all listened and the other guys panned it, basically laughed and said.. "these guys will never make it". My response was... "just wait, they will be huge... this is only the beginning". Guess who was right? Bread not only had a very unique sound for the time, but of course, as history has proven out, set the tone for the era of 70s soft rock. But that said, they also had some very powerful rock numbers that came around in each of their LPs. The most powerful of all, however, was Mother Freedom on the Baby I'm a Want You LP. I saw Bread live, for the first time, at the Honolulu Internation Areana (as it was known then). When they played Mother Freedom, it tore the place apart. It was the most powerful song I had ever heard.. it just knocked everyone's socks off. When I saw Bread during their 25th Anniversary Tour they played Mother Freedom about half way through the show... everyone went crazy... it sounded just like it did in 1972. Amazing. These guys were masters and true artists. It is ashame that Mike Botts and James Griffin have passed on. I can't imagine what it would be to see them again, in a 35th Anniversary Tour... but of course that will never happen... well, at least we have these gems to listen to when we need a dose of 70s soft rock... some real music!

First of all, The above reviewer says " But it's still a '70's period " Some of the best music ever was from this period. He / She must be a '90's baby. This is classic Pop/Rock . The writing and singing are wonderful. I grew up in the early '70's and this is a must buy.

Even though the music is a little slow, the lyrics are great and they tell a story in them. And their lead singer has a very good and soft voice. I'd recommend two songs that are very good: Aubrey and Diary. They are good songs with a good beat. Good buys!
