Eventhough it's been 20 years since Meshell's debut Plantation Lullabies was released.- It's still as phenominal. Everytime I spin it, feels like the first time I fell in love with it. She was coming with such in-your-face playiing and writing that I have rarely witnessed since. I just love the little interludes she put in middle of these great songs. Also her spoken word lyrics really talked about things you rarely hear women of color in R&B and hip hop express. I Still love Meshell's other works, but this will always be my favorite. I just wish she would get back to being funky again like this.

This music fantastic and an oftrn overlooked musician creates a baseline a funk that is true to the heart and soul of hip-hop jazz funk from 1990s. Her music is still relevant and and should be re-released in 2012. Take the time to listen to hear music to listen to the words to feel what Me'shelle is all about

Me'Shell has made eight albums and "Plantation Lullabies" still holds its own over time. The raw power of her vocals display a wide range of emotion and pathos. Her smooth come in "dig you like a old school record" is enough to get anybody nostalgic for the oldies. The pain and anguish from "Shootin Up and Gettin High" pays homage to lost friends, while sonically the bass and the drums lines will have you addicted to this beautifully written eulogy. On the romance side, no one does it better than Me'Shell. Her innocent pleading in "Sweet Love" or her ardent admiration in "Dreadlocks" takes you back to your first crush when you planned your day around chance meetings with your beloved. As superb as she is lyrically, you can't deny that Me'Shell is a master of the groove. The best track "Step into the Projects" is a perfect wedding of melancholy horns, anguished pianos riffs and a melody that 'Bird' would envy. For all true music lovers, this introductory album by Me'Shell sets the tone for the other seven that follow. In it you will find all you need to create peace in your world, musically speaking.
