  • Ode to Robert Mapplethope

All of this poetry surrounds Patti's relationship and understanding with homosexual photographer icon Robert Mapplethorpe. Therefore, it is touching, incredibly moving -- Kevin Shield's sounds wrap around Patti's concepts and bring them to emotional clarity. With 80% of the population claiming to be Jesus phreaks it seems the compassion in this society would be very attuned to Patti's compassion to Robert. For the 10% of the population that are homosexuals, here is something personal, a witness account of the entire journey, the entire scope of the arc of a life that was also captured beautifully and compellingly in pictures. This CD moved me and took over my mind, and that's all that matters when it comes to music. Perhaps someday somebody will be influenced to write a deeply personal ode for you.

To me it seems these performances perfectly embody why Patti has shone so brightly as a beacon of love and light in the dark for so many of us, for so long. I think those of you who don't already hold her close would do well to open their ears and their hearts. You just might find a friend.
  • How about just the music?

This reminds me of rap music, i.e. the music's great power of abstraction sullied by spoken words with clear and definite meaning, which are great for communicating ideas but lousy (by comparison) at transmitting feeling or more abstract truth. Even if the words are poetic.

Undoubtedly, this is the work of as visionary genius, full of passion and meaning and love. If you are incapable of observing and absorbing this, then just go away.

History Lesson: Kevin Shields is My Bloody Valentine. Kids under 25, and claim to be into alternative rock? Check it out. Although quite honestly, there isnt much that's more alternative than this record, right here. That is if we're talking "alternative" to the mainstream. Which we are, arent we? Damn. I'm old.
  • This is not a rock album

I think they should have labeled this better. This is a live reading of Patti Smith's book "The Coral Sea" set to the improved guitar and keyboard drones of Kevin Shields. This is not a Patti Smith rock album or a My Bloody Valentines record. This is a stand along performance by to great artists. Don't buy the singles there pointless. It would be like buying a book and only reading chapter 4.
  • Pity the unwashed masses...

I know the era of freeform artrock (poetic fusion, whatever you want to call it) is dead and gone... but some of the reviews here suggest these nimrods don't even know who Patti Smith is. Time to go back and study your modern musical history, children. Patti's awesome. Her poetry here is uneven, as usual, but also raw and colorful and engaging -- its very unevenness a challenge to keep listening. She pulls off some grace notes, and the backing musical material is haunting and memorable. Good on ya, Patti. Never say die.
  • BIG DISAPOINTMENT!

Wow never I never thought I would be giving Patti a bad review. I mean I saw live a few times and ok she would take a break and get into poetry stick for a few or several minutes before getting to the next song, but two hours of the poetic babble and they want 16 bucks for it? No way!

Was it open mic night at the mushroom house? What the hell is this? Sad day when any 'tard can make a record.
