Rappers as well as other genre owe much to Mr Heron. He was the first true rapper and with his music, especially the above titled, opened the eyes of many as to what was happening in America. During that period I was in the military and stationed in various countries around the globe. Most of them hostile. Returning to the US was both a surprise and disappointment. At that time our good citizen did not care about much other than their favorite beers and tv programs. To them Democracy was safe. Listening to Gil Scott-Heron opened my eyes to the many travestries and missed oportutunities that we as a Nation where missing. Things that could make us truly great.... instead it was and is "Winter in America" .
