This album, from first cut to last, is excellent. I have always been a big fan of Kenny, dating back his days as a young player with Miles at the end of his last era. This recording exudes emotion (IE-Detroit blew me away). The band seriously grooves and his playing is awesome as usual. For any Kenny fan, a must have...

One of the nice things about Kenny Garrett's music is that he always bring creativity, intensity and a deep sense of traditon to whatever he plays. Even his light weight commercially oriented stuff is better than most in that vein. This outing is a wonderous tribute to some of the masters. Trane, McCoy, Jackie McClean, Roy Haynes are some of the influences on this young man with an old soul. Every cut is a gem. The title tract, "Seeds from the Underground", captures the essence of the noble tradition created by our African ancestors who toiled in this country for four centuries with only their faith, cultural traits and spiritual underpinings to sustain them. It is instructive that Kenny quotes from Work Song as he closes out the song. Do -Wo - Mo is a slick medium tempo blues with hip rhythmic breaks a la John Cotrane and McCoy Tyner. Kenny groves over the tight rhtymn section. This is a joyous collection of musicians and compositions. I give the session five stars.

The great Kenny Garrett is a world class artist playing music at the highest level. And this ensemble Kenny has assembled is the perfect complement to him. Every track on Seeds From The Underground should be a required listening experience. If you are a fan K.G. or just like quality music that speaks to the heart, you will not be disappointed. The track, "Welcome Earth Song" is reminiscent of Pharoah Sanders' "Heart is a Melody/Creator Has a Master Plan". Enjoy.

This album is very refreshing! I have been disappointed with a few of his other albums because I wasn't sure if I could discern Kenny Garrett from Kenny G due to his slight departure from the traditional jazz sound. This album is the truth and hope he continues to put out this style and level of JAZZ!!!!
