I almost wore out my old vinyl version of this classic Maynard album. It is nice to be reunited with it again via iTunes, so I look forward to many, many playings. To me this is sort of a middle point work--there is plenty of the straight Big Band sound of the earlier Ferguson recordings, but there is the beginning of the pop mix that would be such a part of his later work. I got less enthused with that later sound (somewhere after Chameleon or Conquistador) but this has none of that heavy, over-the-top sound. This is simply a great jazz album and a great representation of Maynard at some of his best! As another reviewer pointed out, for $5.99, you can't miss.

This was the second Maynard Ferguson album I heard, the first being Chameleon. It's a little different than Chameleon, but that's definitely not a bad thing! The power of "Eli's Comin'" blew me away, and following it are "Ballad to Max" and "MacArthur Park" which are both fantastic. The next two tracks are still good, but not my favorites of the album. Lastly, "L-Dopa" is a fun, faster-paced track which is a great ending to the album. The first three are clearly my favorites, but all in all the entire thing is fun! For $5.99, why NOT buy this album?
