Great CD- went to a recent concert of Jars in Nashville and I really enjoyed reminiscing on their early albums... Fade to Gray is my favorite... definitely speaks to me every time I listen!

I love jars of clay but only recently listened to this album and loved it from the first time I heard it. If u like jars, u will love this album. They are such awesome musicians. They are so unappreciated in my book, when I hear some of the other music out there and then listen to these guys, I shake my head in bewilderment.

This is JoC's best album, from beginning to end. I've been listening to them for almost 20 years now, and while other albums might have 3,4, even 5 better songs, this album is the best when considered as a whole. Who We Are Instead is a close second. This album is full of underrated tracks.

This 2nd album from Jars of Clay was considered a sharp departure from their much-hyped debut album, but in retrospect, it sounds more like it than anything they've done since, and it remains much "fresher" sounding and more interesting musically. Orchestral and electronic elements are layered with acoustic and electric guitars for a sound that ranges from delicate to intense and never stops being beautiful. Calling it "pop" doesn't do it justice. Many of the lyrics are profoundly vague (or vaguely profound?), but this can be a strength as listeners can relate songs to a wide range of experiences, and the music is so evocative and exsquisitely produced, it can hold its own anyway. Jars of Clay has put together a number of good projects over the years, but this one remains the standard for me, and it's a tough standard to measure up to.
  • Fantastic album

My favorite songs on the album have got to be "Overjoyed," "Fade to Grey," and "Portrait of an Apology." But, truthfully, all of the songs are terrific in their own way! Keep it going JOC!!

  • A JOC Classic

Often overshadowed by their first album, Much Afraid doesn't receive the credit it deserves. The album is rich in poetry, supported by soring melodies, moody progressions and lush instrumentation. Songs like Frail, Overjoyed, Tea and Sympathy, Weighed Down, Hymn and others have become JOC classics and speak of a life of faith expressed cleverly, thoughtfully, and beautifully, without the typical cliches often found in Christian music.
