Final Fantasy II is known as the black sheep of the FF series. However, the music is truly worth listening to. Nobuo Uematsu developed his composing ability early and that is clearly evident in this soundtrack. Only in his twenties, he produced such tunes as Battle Theme A (one of the best battle themes in the series IMO) Tower of Magi, and Pandemonium. But the Rebel theme may be the most famous track here as it was used in the Final Fantasy I-III Medley Orchestral Arrangement. These tracks are rather short but that's because this is a very old-school RPG (1988) and lacked pretty much any characterization or plot. I actually got this recording bundled with the FFI soundtrack on two CDs, and you can notice that the MIDI sounds very different between the two soundtracks. Nobuo Uematsu himself arranged the FFI tracks for the playstation port and Tsuyoshi Sekito arranged the other. Sekito, another Squaresoft composer talented in his own right, was responsible for the Brave Fencer Musashi music. He even took drum beats and added them to the first battle them for FFII. One of these tracks near the end is only his composition and sounds nothing like Uematsu. It was a very good arrangement. I feel that this soundtrack has been brought to life as it was originally simple 8-bit beeps and boops and having this at 6 bucks is a pretty good deal. I would definitely recommend this to the ambitious collecter of Uematsu/Final Fantasy music but if you are new to FF music, I feel you should try one of the top selling orchestral arrangements of Uematsu's work. They are longer and more developed pieces. But if you want a few short, catchy, memorable melodies, go ahead and buy the aforementioned tracks.

Like the game, this OST deserves some attention. It may not be great like some FF OSTs, but with tunes like the overworld theme, Tower pf the Magi, and Pandaemonium, it is still worth checking out. And for 6 bucks, you get quite a lot.

Final Fantasy II (not to be confused with Final Fantasy IV, as it was initially known as II on the SNES) was the first game in the series to actually introduce characters with dialogue and emotions, and a compelling storyline. While today this probably is second nature to us, at the time it was something rather new to the scene of video gaming, something once considered nothing more than virtual sports. The music is no exception. Tsuyoshi Sekito's work to remix and recreate the soundtrack to Final Fantasy II is clearly evident as the result is delightful. It can't be easy to make an old soundtrack ten times better, but boy did he ever do just that. Congrats, Tsuyoshi and Nobuo.
